Bio

Born in Katerini in 1975, Bakas studied Composition with Theodore Antoniou. In 2004 he moved in London for further studies in Composition at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he was awarded an MMus and a PhD under the supervision of Roger Redgate. During his PhD he attended the Master in Electroacoustic Composition at Goldsmiths. In 2009 he was a shortlist composer at Sound and Music. For the academic year 2010-2011 Bakas was a visiting scholar at Columbia University in New York (accepted by Tristan Murail). His music has been performed in the UK, Greece and USA and has successfully participated in competition and in residencies worldwide.

His music has been performed in the UK, Greece and USA and has successfully participated in competition and in residencies worldwide, while he participates regularly in conferences such as, Sonic Mmabolela (South Africa, 2013), Joint ICMC/SMS (Athens, 2014), 3rd-4rth-5th Conferences for Acoustic Ecology (Athens, 2014 – Mitilini, 2016, Kalamata, 2019), Composer in Residence, Visby Centre for Composers (Sweden, Gotland, 2015 and 2017), ICMC (North Texas, 2015), AAWM and FMA (Thessaloniki, 2016), SMC (Cyprus, 2018), MOISA (Thessaloniki, 2019), National Greek Opera (Commission – ‘R-evolution’, 2022), Nakas Concervatory and Greek, Composers Union (2023), Laureate of the 1st degree (International Competition dedicated to Stravinsky, Russia, 2025) etc.

He is also active as a Sound Artist working mainly with Museums. For his sound art works he was awarded a Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Art Prize 2024 ‘in recognition of his high artistic quality’.

Sound art work of his, include works such as, Sound Installation for the Museum of Greek Traditional Costumes V. Karelia (two Commissions); Site Specific Art for the Tower of Giannitsa (Commission by the Mayor of Giannitsa); Sound Installation for the Ethnological Museum of Macedonia and Thrace (Commission); Sound Installation for the Archeological Museum of Thessaloniki; Sound Art work for a Group Exhibition at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid), Insteractive Sound Installation with metal contruction and live processing of sound (Olympolis art project funded by the Greek ministry of culture), Sound Installation for the echibition ‘Raiments of Soul’ at the Museum of Acropolis (Athens), Sound Installation for the echibition Light and Thread (Tel Aviv), etc.

Bakas has also frequently collaborated with other artists in the past in works for various media, such as, music for Apostolos Gaitanis’ documentaries The Valley of Eordea (broadcast on Al Jazeera TV in December 2008) and Citizen Journalism (3rd Prize, Broadcast Journalism training Council (BJTC), category: Current Affairs Feature, March 2009, Great Britain); Sound Installation in Collaboration with the Artist Xinyi Liu (176 Gallery, London, 2009); and music for education CD ROM, The Costakis Collection, in collaboration with Nikos Karatzoulis for the State Museum of Contemporary Art (Thessaloniki, 2007), etc.

He is member of the Greek Composers Union (EEM), The Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association (HELMCA), the Contemporary Music Research Centre (KSYME), the Hellenic Society for Acoustic Ecology (HSAE) and the temp’Ora Project.

 

Βιογραφικό

Γεννημένος στην Κατερίνη το 1975, ο Μπάκας σπούδασε Σύνθεση με τον Θεόδωρο Αντωνίου. Το 2004 μετακόμισε στο Λονδίνο για περαιτέρω σπουδές στη Σύνθεση στο Goldsmiths, Πανεπιστήμιο του Λονδίνου, όπου απέκτησε MMus και PhD υπό την επίβλεψη του Roger Redgate. Κατά τη διάρκεια του διδακτορικού του, παρακολούθησε το Μεταπτυχιακό στην Ηλεκτροακουστική Σύνθεση στο Goldsmiths. Το 2009 ήταν υποψήφιος συνθέτης στο Sound and Music. Για το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2010-2011, ο Μπάκας ήταν επισκέπτης ερευνητής στο Πανεπιστήμιο Columbia στη Νέα Υόρκη (αποδεκτός από τον Tristan Murail).

Η μουσική του έχει εκτελεστεί στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, την Ελλάδα και τις ΗΠΑ και έχει συμμετάσχει επιτυχώς σε διαγωνισμούς και σε residencies παγκοσμίως, ενώ συμμετέχει τακτικά σε συνέδρια όπως, Sonic Mmabolela (Νότια Αφρική, 2013), Joint ISCM/SMC (Αθήνα, 2014), 3ο-4ο-5ο Συνέδρια για την Ακουστική Οικολογία (Αθήνα, 2014 – Μυτιλήνη, 2016, Καλαμάτα, 2019), Composer in Residence, Visby Centre for Composers (Σουηδία, Γκότλαντ, 2015 και 2017), ICMC (Βόρειο Τέξας, 2015), AAWM και FMA (Θεσσαλονίκη, 2016), SMC (Κύπρος, 2018), MOISA (Θεσσαλονίκη, 2019), Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή (Παραγγελία – ‘R-evolution’, 2022), Ωδείο Νάκας και Ένωση Ελλήνων Συνθετών (Συναυλία για Βιολί, 2023), ISCM 2023 (Selected Composer, Representing Greece, Faroe Islands), Laureate of the 1st grade Award (Διεθνής Διαγωνισμός, αφιερωμένος στον Στραβίνσκι, 2025, Ρωσία) κ.α.

Ηχητικό έργο για Ομαδική Έκθεση στο Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Μαδρίτη); Διαδραστική Ηχητική Εγκατάσταση με μεταλλική κατασκευή και ζωντανή επεξεργασία ήχου (Olympolis art project χρηματοδοτούμενο από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού); Ηχητική Εγκατάσταση για την έκθεση «Ένδυμα Ψυχής» στο Μουσείο Ακρόπολης (Αθήνα) υπό την αιγίδα της προέδρου της Δημοκρατίας, Ηχητική Εγκατάσταση για την έκθεση Light and Thread (Τελ Αβιβ) κ.λπ.

Ο Μπάκας έχει επίσης συνεργαστεί συχνά με άλλους καλλιτέχνες στο παρελθόν σε έργα για διάφορα μέσα, όπως, μουσική για τα ντοκιμαντέρ του Απόστολου Γαϊτάνη «Η Κοιλάδα της Εορδαίας» (προβλήθηκε στο Al Jazeera TV τον Δεκέμβριο του 2008) και «Citizen Journalism» (3ο Βραβείο, Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC), κατηγορία: Current Affairs Feature, Μάρτιος 2009, Μεγάλη Βρετανία). Ηχητική Εγκατάσταση σε Συνεργασία με την Καλλιτέχνη Xinyi Liu (176 Gallery, Λονδίνο, 2009). Μουσική για εκπαιδευτικό CD ROM, «Η Συλλογή Κωστάκη», σε συνεργασία με τον Νίκο Καρατζούλη για το Κρατικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (Θεσσαλονίκη, 2007), κ.λπ.

Είναι μέλος της Ένωσης Ελλήνων Μουσουργών (ΕΕΜ), της Ελληνικής Ένωσης Συνθετών Ηλεκτροακουστικής Μουσικής (ΕΣΣΗΜ), του Κέντρου Σύγχρονης Μουσικής Έρευνας (ΚΣΥΜΕ), της Ελληνικής Εταιρείας Ακουστικής Οικολογίας (ΕΕΑΟ) και του temp’Ora Project.
